Vault Change Log
The following is a summary of the changes that have been made to Vault
from one version to the next.
Version 2.06
When printing you can now prevent indentation by clearing the Indent checkbox. This
option is useful when you’re printing a deeply nested outline item or group of items
and don’t want everything to be indented. See File / Print Preview and File / Print for
further information.
Version 2.05
You can now collapse all outline items using a toolbar button: . See Outline / Collapse All
for further information.

Vault’s sort feature now only sorts selected outline items. See Outline / Sort for further information.

Added an Export tab to the Settings dialog to specify how to perform HTML and XML exports. See Options / Settings

Version 2.01
The File / Export command creates Unicode (UTF-16, little endian) files for HTML and XML exports. This enables
non-English text to be exported correctly.
When adding a new item, you can type the item's text in the same dialog box in which the title is typed. See
Outline / Add Above or Outline / Add Below for further details.
Version 2.00
You can now optionally password protect your Vault files. See File / Password and the Passwords tab of the
Options / Settings dialog for further details.
Version 1.41
Bug Fix: In previous versions the View / Switch Between Outline and Text feature, which can also be activated by
pressing F6, sometimes did not set focus to the correct window.
Bug Fix: In previous versions if you displayed a long topic and scrolled to the bottom and then displayed a smaller
topic, the new topic was scrolled to the bottom and appeared blank.
Bug Fix: In some previous versions the Edit / Undo command did not work.
Version 1.40
Added an Insert Hyperlink command. See Edit / Insert Hyperlink for further details.

Added an HTML export feature. This feature requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or later. See File / Export

The unregistered version of Vault is now restricted to 100 topics or less.

The last 20 searches are saved and can be re-used. See Search / Search for further details.
When you double-click a Vault file with the Windows Explorer, or when you create a shortcut to Vault, that filename will take precedence over the settings in the Options / Settings dialog, Startup File tab.
The Toolbar and Status Bar menus have been removed from the Options menu. To enable or disable the toolbar and status bar, select Options / Settings and go to the Appearance tab.
Outline icons are now properly drawn for non-white window backgrounds.
Version 1.34
You can now change the number of Most Recently Used (MRU) files listed in the File menu. See Options / Settings
for further details.
Bug fix: In previous versions, when you selected new outline items by clicking them with the mouse, the
corresponding text was drawn twice. On slow machines this was annoying.
Bug fix: In previous versions, sometimes after an outline item was collapsed by pressing the mouse in
the - rectangle, the wrong items were selected.
Added Visit Our Web Site item to the Help menu.
Version 1.33
It's now possible to automatically visit the web site(s) in the current topic. See Web / Visit Web Site(s) for further
details. Note: for performance reasons the Visit Web Site(s) toolbar icon and menu item are always enabled.
You can now cancel a drag and drop operation by pressing the Esc key.
Version 1.32
Optionally, whenever a document is opened, the outline will appear exactly as it did the last time the document
was opened. To change this option, see Options / Settings.
The Options / Settings dialog has been converted into a tabbed dialog to make it less busy.
Outline / Expand All is much faster now (since it only displays the changes after the outline has been fully expanded).
Edit / Undo is now properly enabled and disabled.
The following bug has been fixed: Start Vault. Select an outline item that has text. Make a small change to that
item's text, and then undo your change. For example, press the spacebar and then press backspace. Now press
the leftmost toolbar button (File / New). The program will crash.
Version 1.31
Outline items can now be moved by dragging and dropping them. To move one or more outline items, first select
them with the mouse. Then press the left mouse button down on one of the selected items. While holding the
mouse button down, move the mouse. When you release the mouse, the items will be moved below the current item.
If you move the mouse above or below the outline, the outline will scroll if necessary. If you leave the mouse
over a closed book for a moment, the book will automatically open.
To cancel a move, press the Esc key or release the mouse when the cursor is outside of the outline.
Pressing the Enter key now expands a closed book or collapses an open book.
Version 1.30
Headings and page numbers are now optional on printouts. See File Print for further details.
If the outline is not printed, text will not be indented to the right of the left margin.
Version 1.29
Added Next Search Item and Previous Search Item to the Search menu and toolbar.
Added Next Search Word and Previous Search Word to the toolbar. Note: for performance reasons the
Next and Previous Search Word toolbar icons are not enabled and disabled in all situations.
Re-arranged some menu and toolbar items.
The above changes required changing the function key assignments (sorry!).
Note: the new toolbar items are only visible with higher than 640 X 480 screen resolution. See The Toolbar
for further details.
When View / Maximize Text is selected, focus is set to the text window. When View / Maximize Outline is selected,
focus is set to the outline.
Version 1.28
If you are e-mailing a single item, and if you have selected text in that item, you will have the option of sending
only the selected text or the entire item. See File / Send and Send Dialog Box for further details.
The closed book, open book, and page graphics in the outline are now optional. The nesting lines drawn in the
outline are also optional. See Options / Settings for further information.
Version 1.27
The following enhancements have been added to improve Vault's support for current Windows user interface standards:

When the current outline item is a closed book and the right arrow key is pressed the book automatically opens.

When the current outline item is an open book and the left arrow key is pressed the book automatically closes. When the current outline item is an open book and the right arrow key is pressed, the next item down becomes the current item.

When the current outline item is a closed book and the left arrow key is pressed, that item's parent is automatically selected.

Books are drawn with expand/contract rectangles to the left. A single mouse click on an expand/contract
rectangle will expand or contract the associated item.

Hold down the Ctrl key while pressing the right and left arrow keys to scroll the outline window horizontally.

The Go To menu has been removed. To switch between the outline and text windows, select View / Switch
Between Outline and Text (F6).

Dialog boxes now use the new standard (smaller) font size.
Version 1.26
Vault documents can now be automatically saved every 1 to 60 minutes. See Options / Settings for further
information.
Version 1.25
Bug fixed in File / Export feature. Previous versions of Vault inserted extra carriage return characters in the text
file created by the Export command.
Version 1.24
Vault has been translated into German by Michael Motylewski.
The Edit / Find command now has a Ctrl+F accelerator. The Edit / Replace command now has a Ctrl+R accelerator.
The Edit and Outline menus have been switched to agree with the placement of the outline and text windows
when the splitter bar is vertical.
The help file has been updated to keep in synch with the common dialog boxes in Windows 95 and NT. Obsolete
references to Windows 3.1 in the help file have been removed.

Bug fix: In version 1.21 the text window's vertical scrollbar was sometimes not displayed appropriately when Vault was first run.

Searches can now be restricted to just the selected outline items. In previous versions, the search command always searched all outline items. For further details, see Search / Search.
The status bar now displays "OVR" when the text window is in overstrike mode. The overstrike mode is toggled every time the Insert key is pressed.
The Ctrl+A accelerator (for Select All) was added to the Edit menu.
When the Vault document is empty, the following message is displayed in the status bar:

Version 1.20
Bug fix: In previous versions, when the topmost outline item was not visible but the listbox was big enough to display all items, the vertical scrollbar was disabled.
The on-line help text describing the enhanced editing features was corrected and expanded. See paragraphs 2 and 3 of the "Version 1.19" section below.
Version 1.19
In previous versions, the text of each outline item was limited to about 32,000 characters under Windows 95. This limitation has been removed - outline items can now have up to 16 megabytes of text (under Windows 95 and NT). See Limitations for further information.
The text window now has enhanced editing features. For example, to select a word, double-click it with the left mouse button. To move text, select the text, then click the selection with the left mouse button and keep the button held down. Drag the cursor to the new location of the text and release the button. This mechanism can even be used to move text from another application (for example, Word for Windows, WordPad, etc.).
The above procedure will move the text to a new location and delete the text from the original location. If you want to retain the text in the original location, hold down the control key during the entire process.
Search hits are now underlined. See Search / Previous Search Word and Search / Next Search Word for further information.
The margin around the text in the text window is now identical to the margin around the outline window. In previous versions, the text window's margin was proportional to its font size.
Bug fix: In previous versions, after the last outline item was cut, the text window was not cleared and disabled.

Error corrected in the description of the Vault File Format. In section 3 H, the item state will be 1 (not 0) if the item contains subordinate items.

The Dial Phone command now dials the text selected in the text window rather than just the first line.

Bug fix: The Options menu had two "S" accelerators. This problem was fixed by changing the accelerator for "Status Bar" to "B".

Bug fix: When shortcuts of Vault files were run in a minimized window, and the "Don't automatically load file on start-up" option was selected, the files were not loaded. This bug has been fixed in this version.

Vault now features a Windows-95 style help system.

A Search menu has been added.
Searches can now involve multiple words. For example, users can search for items containing:
- "Windows 95" and "multimedia" and "software"

- etc.

Users can now jump from one search word to another in items. See Search / Previous Search Word and Search / Next Search Word for further information.
